CLINICAL SAFETY

Needle Standards &
Safety Protocols

Acupuncture safety held to the same rigorous standards as British hospital practice.

At TaoHeal, your safety is non-negotiable. Every needle insertion follows protocols developed through hospital clinical training and emergency medical experience. These standards are not merely "industry best practices"—they are the baseline of medical safety you would expect in any NHS facility.

Needle Specifications

Single-Use Sterile Needles Only

Every needle is individually packaged, factory-sterilized, and used only once. No needle is ever reused or re-sterilized. After treatment, all needles are immediately disposed of in medical-grade sharps containers.

Medical-Grade Materials

All acupuncture needles are surgical-grade stainless steel (typically 0.18-0.25mm diameter), individually sealed in sterile blister packs, and certified to meet UK medical device standards (CE marked).

Supplier Verification

Needles are sourced exclusively from verified medical suppliers that meet UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) standards.

Infection Control Protocols

Pre-Treatment Hygiene

  • Clinician hand washing with antibacterial soap or hand santinizer before every client
  • Alcohol-based hand sanitizer between needle insertions
  • Skin preparation with 70% isopropyl alcohol swabs

Treatment Room Hygiene

  • Treatment surfaces cleaned and disinfected between patients
  • Single-use disposable couch covers for each session
  • Medical-grade sharps disposal containers (BS 7320 compliant)

Professional Training & Certification

The clinician holds:

  • 01 5-year university degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine including mandatory training in aseptic technique and needling safety
  • 02 Hospital residency training in China with direct exposure to clinical infectious disease protocols
  • 03 Advanced Life Support (ALS) and Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) certification
  • 04 International SOS Medical Officer experience conducting emergency procedures in remote environments with stringent hygiene protocols

Regulatory Compliance

ATCM Member (Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine)

Fully registered and regulated by the ATCM—the UK's leading professional body for TCM practitioners. This requires adherence to strict codes of practice for safety, hygiene, and professional conduct.

Professional Liability Insurance

Comprehensive indemnity insurance coverage in place for all treatments provided.

GDPR & Data Protection

All patient records are maintained in strict compliance with UK GDPR regulations. See our Privacy Policy for details.

Contraindications & Screening

Prior to any needling, patients are screened for contraindications including:

Bleeding disorders or anticoagulant medication use
Active skin infections at treatment sites
Pregnancy (certain points are avoided)
Metal allergies (though rare with surgical steel)

Informed consent is obtained before every treatment, and patients are encouraged to disclose any medical conditions or concerns.

Adverse Event Management

While serious adverse events in acupuncture are exceedingly rare when performed correctly (less than 0.05% according to clinical studies), we maintain emergency protocols including:

  • Vasovagal response management (fainting): Patients are treated lying down with monitoring for lightheadedness
  • Minor bleeding control: Immediate pressure application and sterile dressing
  • Emergency contact protocols: Direct access to emergency medical services if needed

Common Safety Questions

Can I get an infection from acupuncture needles?

No. When single-use sterile needles are employed (as they are in this clinic), and proper skin preparation is followed, the risk of infection is virtually zero. There are no documented cases of HIV or hepatitis transmission from modern sterile acupuncture practice in the UK.

Will the needles be painful?

Acupuncture needles are hair-thin (0.18-0.25mm)—far finer than injection needles. Most patients report minimal to no sensation upon insertion. You may feel a brief "pinch" or mild pressure, but this is not comparable to vaccination or blood draw discomfort.

What if I have a needle phobia?

We understand needle anxiety. Treatments can be adapted to use fewer needles, shallower insertion depths, or alternative therapies (such as cupping or herbal medicine) until you feel comfortable. Communication is key—let us know your concerns.
